This course provides the knowledge and skills for employment in the area of Hairdressing. There is particular emphasis placed on the practical side of Hairdressing, where learners will gain the skills necessary to work in a salon locally, nationally and internationally. Master integral skills such as barbering, colouring, upstyling in a fully equipped and working salon. Gain the benefit of work experience in an established hairdressing salon on a day-release basis throughout the academic year. Students participate in hairdressing competitions, beauty & skincare workshops.

Leaving Certificate, LCA or QQI Level 4.Mature students are exempt from Leaving Certificate requirements. All applicants are interviewed.

An offer of a place on this courses is contingent on the applicant meeting the entry requirement set out here and satisfactory presentation at interview.

PLC Maintenance Grant Scheme
Maintenance grants are available to adults and post-leaving cert students who are progressing to a QQI Level 5/6 Award or equivalent, and who have not previously studied for such an award. Hairdressing Theory and Practice 5N3445 Appreciate the need for safe & hygenic work practices. Learn how to establish & maintain good personal relationships with clients & colleagues. Gain a basic knowledge of hair style & design. Gain proficiency in basic hairdressing skills. Understand the organisation & workings of a hairdressing salon.

Hairdressing Science 5N3346 Gain a working knowledge of the hair & skin structure, body systems & their relation to hair & skin. Develop an awareness of chemicals used in the industry & health and safety procedures relating to their use. Gain an appreciation of the disorders revealed in the hairdressing industry.

Safety & Health at Work 5N1794 To create an awareness of safety & health issues in the workplace. Identification of hazards. Duties of the Employer & Employee. An appreciation of legislation and acting appropriately to avoid incidents.

Customer Service 5N0972 Understand the value of the customer service discipline. Learn how to provide customer service effectively within a hairdressing/beauty environment. Explore the role & responsibilities of a representative of an organisation and work effectively as part of a team.

Work Experience 5N1356 One day a week work placement in a salon. One-to-one consultation in relation to your CV design and finding a suitable placement – focussing on your skills and talents, etc. Link with local employers and job opportunities

Barbering 5N3348 Learn how to work to a professional standard. Become proficient in basic barbering skills. Gain a clear understanding of the workings of a Barber Shop. Develop safe & hygienic work practices

Beauty Industry Ethics and Practice 5N3470 Understand the importance of professionalism, ethics & good working relationships in the beauty industry. Appreciate the importance of marketing, public relations & business skills Learn about the role of the receptionist in this industry.

Creative Styling 5N3349 This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide an upstyle, wig, hairpiece or hair extension service for a client using relevant equipment and styling products.
