Is this course for you?
The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide holistic care for older people in a variety of care settings working under the direction and supervision of nursing and or midwifery staff.

Mature Applicants with relevant life and work experience are welcomed. The Course Advisor is available to meet with prospective learners to discuss and advise on the course details, career and academic opportunities and assess your suitability for the course.

Entry Criteria
Entry criteria / prerequisites Level 5 Certificate / Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) or relevant life experience detailed in a current Curriculum Vitae. Please provide details and attach a copy of either a current CV or Certificate. Learners must be a resident of Ireland / based in Ireland.

English
As this NFQ level 5 qualification is delivered through English it is necessary learners will have sufficient written English skills to complete this course. Forus Training recommends a minimum English language competency of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) for successful completion of this programme. If you are not sure what level of English competency you have, please contact hello@forustraining.ie and a Course Advisor will arrange for you to take an assessment.

IT Skills and Equipment Required
Basic working knowledge of computers and access to a computer with internet access is required to do the course. A PC with Windows 8 or later or a Mac with OSX 10.5 or later.

Word processing software, such as MS Word or Google Docs.

Careers / Further progression

What are my progression routes?
This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use their credits towards completing a higher level of study in the area of Health and Social Care.

Students who successfully complete this Major Award can also use the Certificate as the basis for entry into selected courses in Third Level Colleges and Universities.

This course will provide you with the training and knowledge to enable you to provide holistic care for older people in a variety of care settings while you work under the supervision of nursing and or midwifery staff.

Through this programme you will discover how to:
Discuss the structure of the Health Service Executive and the role of the family support worker, to include knowledge of Irish child and family legislation

Explore aspects of normative child development, to include influences of family dynamics, social, cultural and environmental factors on same

Employ knowledge of legislation including risk management legislation and organisational structure in relation to family support work

Discuss the various family types that have emerged in Ireland and their influence on child development

Use a range of interpersonal and leadership skills required to promote effective relationships in family support work, to include advocacy, confidentiality and effective teamwork

Develop an understanding of parenting skills to include an awareness of the adverse implications of social issues for same

Employ the necessary skills and attitudes to work effectively with others, including conflict resolution and negotiation skills

Explore the importance of verbal and non verbal communication and the range of key care skills to assist and support persons in a family support context

Use the range of skills required to work effectively and confidently with persons in a family support context

Work independently and as part of a healthcare team to respond appropriately to the needs of persons in family support contexts.

Skills Demonstration
A skills demonstration is used to assess a wide range of practical based learning outcomes including practical skills and knowledge. A skills demonstration will require the learner to complete a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills.

Learner Record
A learner record is the learner's self-reported and self-reflective record in which he/she describes specific learning experiences, activities, responses and skills acquired.

Pass 50% - 64%
Merit 65% - 70%
Distinction 80% - 100%

What qualification will I receive?
You will be awarded a certificate 5N3738 Family Support Skills.
