Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate with five O6 grades (or five passes pre 2017) or equivalent is the standard entry requirement for Level 5 courses. Leaving Certificate Applied or QQI Level 4 Award are also acceptable on the majority of Level 5 courses.

Some courses have subject specific requirements and these will be noted on relevant course pages.

A QQI Level 5 award or equivalent in a relevant subject area is the standard entry requirement for Level 6 Advanced Certificate courses.

Good News Regarding Your Course Fees

In August 2022, Monaghan Institute and CMETB announced plans to significantly reduce fees on full time courses. This means that your course fees have been reduced to a maximum of €200. If you have a Medical Card/Social Welfare Payment, the fee will be €150. This fee includes all course materials, exam fees, toolkits, and uniforms.

Full-time learners may be eligible to apply for PLC maintenance grants, which are means tested. For further details, visit www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie where applications can be made online or downloaded.

You can apply online now. Applications close in October each year and reopen for the next academic year in January.

STE2 - Level 5 Food Science and Nutrition

Is this course right for you?
This one-year course is suitable for learners who are interested in preparing for a career as a food scientist and/or in progression to third level education in the food, science or agriculture sectors.

This programme aims to equip learners with the scientific and practical knowledge and skills to work in a laboratory in the food industry. Learners will develop practical laboratory skills and carry out a range of laboratory and scientific tests that will support the theory and scientific knowledge of the modules they study.

What will you study?
The Food Science and Nutrition course will focus on Food Chemistry and Nutrition while also covering the other science disciplines such as Biology, Chemistry and Microbiology. All the science modules have a considerable proportion of practical work in them, which the learner will undertake in our modern science laboratory.

Learners will be required to undertake work experience during the course of the year, which is an exciting opportunity for them to put into practice the laboratory skills they will have developed in college.

Guest speakers are invited to contribute to the course and field trips are also undertaken.
