All Level 5 evening courses are free of charge under the Skills to Advance or Skills to Compete initiative.

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to adapt and integrate new approaches for people with Specific Learning Disabilities into an inclusive learning environment.

Learners will be able to:
• Demonstrate awareness of the components of information processing and explore ways in which own learning is processed

• Identify preferred learning channel and style

• Outline the range of Specific Learning Difficulties that exist and the overlap between different SPLDs

• Outline the nature of dyslexia, dyspraxia, AD(H)D and Asperger’s Syndrome

• Define Dyspraxia and name the difficulties that individuals with Dyspraxia face in training/education and in the workplace

• Define Dyslexia and list the difficulties that individuals with Dyslexia face in training/education and in the workplace

• Demonstrate understanding of where Asperger Syndrome sits within the spectrum of Specific Learning Difficulties

• Name the types of issues and difficulties facing a person with Asperger Syndrome

• Recognise the types of issues and difficulties facing a person with ADD/ADHD

• Explain the differences in learning channels and styles which may be found in any one class or group

• Recognise how learning channels and styles are key tools for supporting learners with specific learning processing issues

• Apply new knowledge to daily activities when working with individuals with Dyslexia

• Demonstrate an understanding of adaptations to the environment to meet the needs of individuals with Dyslexia in training/education or in the workplace

• Be aware of some of the assistive/adaptive technology suitable for people with Dyslexia

• Describe a number of communication strategies which might be applied in a practical context

• Demonstrate an awareness of the high incidence of other medical and/or psychiatric conditions that are frequently present in individuals with ADD/ADHD

• Communicate practical suggestions for support in training/education, the workplace and home environments

• Apply knowledge to daily activities when working with individuals with Dyspraxia Identify Dyspraxia within an individual planning process

• Identify Dyslexia within an individual planning process

• Support the development of Dyslexia-friendly attitudes in the workplace

• Recognise how to respond appropriately to a person with Asperger Syndrome in a teaching and learning environment

• Apply appropriate strategies through negotiation with an individual with ADD/ADHD

• Respond appropriately in a teaching and learning environment to a person with ADD/ADHD

• Support the development of ADD/ADHD friendly attitudes at school, college and in the workplace
