Entry Requirements

Learners wishing to access this award must have a minimum of a pass grade (or equivalent) in all of the following QQI level 5 minor awards, Sound Engineering and Production 5N1900, Music Technology 5N1640, Music Industry Studies 5N1458, Communications 5N0690 and Work Experience 5N1356.

Competence in English (CEFR level B2) is required.

Equal consideration will be given to applicants who do not meet these entry requirements through recognition of prior learning (RPL).
Desirable entry requirements include some knowledge of music theory.

Career Opportunities
Graduates of this course in Audio and Music Production will be able to pursue many opportunities as sound engineers, sound editors, composers and producers in a range of areas, including games, TV and film, animation, theatre, live sound and lighting production, studio recording and radio.

Roles and occupations include audio technician, sound engineer, recording engineer, mix engineer, sound designer, sound editor, mastering engineer, general theatre technician, sales and product development, light and sound designer, composer, songwriter and audio/visual technician.

Graduates of this course are eligible to apply through the Higher Education Links Scheme for entry to a range of higher certificate and degree programmes at Institutes of Technology and Universities in Ireland and the UK (Please check with individual institution, regarding local eligibility requirements).

1. PLC Maintenance Grant
Means-tested maintenance grants are available to eligible students attending approved full-time courses of further education in approved Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) centres, of which Cavan Institute is one.
Applications can be made online to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie

2. Back to Education Allowance (BTEA)
The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) allows people in receipt of certain social welfare payments to retain those payments whilst participating in approved full-time courses in further education.

3. Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS)
This scheme allows unemployed people aged over 21 to engage in education and training without losing their benefits. It applies to all courses offered at Cavan Institute and applicants must be in receipt of one of a number of social welfare supports for at least six months.

4. HEA Fund for Students with Disabilities
The Higher Education Authority’s “Fund for Students with Disabilities” allocates funding to further and higher education colleges for the provision of services and supports to full-time students with disabilities. Applications to the fund are made on behalf of an eligible student by Cavan Institute following an assessment.

June 1st is the closing date for receipt of applications for first round offers. However, applications will be accepted and processed on courses where places are available following this date and second round offers will be made to eligible applicants who apply after that date.

Students will gain hands-on experience in studio work, music and sound tracking, audio mixing and mastering, sound design, Foley, composition, song writing and post-production for TV and film in our high-spec studios and multimedia editing suites. A series of live events throughout the academic year will allow students to gain experience in live sound and lighting techniques whilst developing the necessary skills required in organising and staging events.

Students will develop the knowledge and skills required to find work and conduct business in an increasingly digitised sector.

As part of the course, students will be offered the opportunity to achieve certification in the Avid Pro Tools 100 series and DANTE, whilst developing competence in Reason, Adobe Audition, Sibelius, Ableton and other software.
