Candidates for the degree of PhD or MSc by research must have reached a high honours standard (minimum [H2.2 or equivalent international qualification] for an MSc) at the examination for the primary degree or presented such other evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of his/her fitness.

Biostatistics involves the design, analysis and interpretation of clinical trials, observational studies of disease causation, diagnostic test evaluations and medical imaging studies. The research is carried out in collaboration with the HRB Clinical Research Facility University of Galway. On completion the student will be well-equipped to take on a position as a statistician in government or industry or to continue in a PhD program in Biostatistics.
This involves more applied work in the medical area, typically in collaboration with the Clinical Research Facility at NUI Galway. Topics include clinical trials, survival analysis, and registry-based studies.
