Entry Requirements

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:
• Successful completion of a programme leading to a level 5 QQI minor or major Childcare Certificate / Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification in a related field and/or relevant life or work experience. Please contact the College for requirements surrounding Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for entry.
• Learners must be currently either working or have access to work experience (can be voluntary) in an Early Childhood Care and Education setting for a minimum of 20 hours, during the course, as assignments will require learners to draw upon practical experience to complete activities.
• Ability to demonstrate the levels of knowledge, skill and competence associated with NFQ level 6.
• Learners must hold a valid PPS Number.
• Be able to read, draft, prepare, understand and process information across a broad range of topics.
• Learners must be fluent in English with excellent written English skills to complete this course. Learners for whom English is not their first language will be required to provide evidence of meeting a minimum English language and literacy competency of B2 in writing, reading, listening, and speaking on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
• Be self-motivated and have the capacity to share the responsibility for their own learning.
• Be able to complete the self-directed hours of learning in the form of practice time, preparation, study time and reflection time.
• Available to attend scheduled online webinars and participate in all programme-related activities.
• Learners must be competent and confident in an online learning environment and have access to a laptop/PC/suitable mobile device with a functioning camera and audio and sufficient internet speed and strength.

Childhood Social, Legal And Health Studies Course Details
Learners who successfully complete this course will:-
• Evaluate a range of factors influencing and impacting on children's health and wellbeing to include family structure, community, culture, education, health, social services and social status
• Evaluate child protection guidelines in relation to the protection of children and staff
• Assess statutory regulations and national practice guidelines, which relate directly to and impact on early childhood care and education settings
• Examine national and international social policy and how it impacts on the wellbeing of children and families
• Implement procedures for dealing with specific child protection issues
• Evaluate the relevance of policies and procedures which safeguard children within ECCE settings

Assessment
This course is divided into 9 study units. You will be assessed through completion of a project and two assignments. This will include demonstration of your understanding and application of concepts, selection of relevant research techniques and sources of information and also your ability to analyse, evaluate, draw conclusions and make recommendations.

All work submitted must be your own and the course must be completed within 12 weeks of receiving your study units. There is no final exam at the end of the course. Work submitted will be marked by your tutor, checked by an internal verifier and also by an independent QQI external authenticator.

In addition in every unit you will find practice questions and activities. These are provided as a means of self-assessment and progress check.

On successful completion of this course you will receive a QQI Level 6 Component Certificate in Childhood Social, Legal and Health Studies (6N1945) from QQI.
