Entry Requirements

Students should have successfully completed an appropriate QQI Level 5 course such as Computer Games Design, Computer Games Programming, Creative Digital Media (Year 1) or Software Development (Year 1 ), all available at Cavan Institute.
Equal consideration will be given to mature applicants (those aged over 23) who do not meet this entry requirement but can demonstrate industry experience.

Career Opportunities
With the recent increase in home game usage, online gaming and traditional PC and arcade games, this innovative sector continues to grow and expand at a rapid pace. Consequently, there has been a marked increase in the demand for games developers in recent years. Job offers include: research assistants, games designers, Unity game developers, technical artists, vfx (visual effects) artist, Unreal Engine programmers etc.

1. PLC Maintenance Grant
Means-tested maintenance grants are available to eligible students attending approved full-time courses of further education in approved Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) centres, of which Cavan Institute is one.
Applications can be made online to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) through www.studentfinance.ie or www.susi.ie

2. Back to Education Allowance (BTEA)
The Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) allows people in receipt of certain social welfare payments to retain those payments whilst participating in approved full-time courses in further education.

3. Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme (VTOS)
This scheme allows unemployed people aged over 21 to engage in education and training without losing their benefits. It applies to all courses offered at Cavan Institute and applicants must be in receipt of one of a number of social welfare supports for at least six months.

4. HEA Fund for Students with Disabilities
The Higher Education Authority’s “Fund for Students with Disabilities” allocates funding to further and higher education colleges for the provision of services and supports to full-time students with disabilities. Applications to the fund are made on behalf of an eligible student by Cavan Institute following an assessment.

About This Course
The games development sec­tor demands a range of skills across the creative, technical and commercial domains. As well as the obvious technical skills, success for games developers also relies on an ability to manage and market their projects. Therefore the so-called soft skills within the multidisciplinary environment of the games sector are also needed. These include project management capabilities, team-working, problem solving and communication skills.

This course in Computer Games Development will enable you to develop these technical, personal and interpersonal skills through the activities and projects taught as part of the course curriculum. These include 2D and 3D games development through multiple platforms (Unreal Engine and Unity), 3D modelling and animation, web design, graphic design and sound editing.
