Entry Requirements

Course Requirements:
Level 4 in Sports Massage Therapy or equivalent prior to the commencement of the ITEC level 5 (UK) Sports Massage Therapy Qualification. This new exciting course covers the ITEC syllabus Units 459 and Unit 460. It has been designed for Therapists who are currently working in the Sport and Active leisure, including Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Massage Therapists with the requisite understanding and complex skills and techniques to work as an advanced Sports Massage Practitioner / Therapists.

Advanced practitioners will be equipped to work with clientele ranging from recreational sports, active leisure enthusiasts to professional sports persons and elite athletes.

The course is delivered with a practical focus. It aims to progress the Sports Massage Therapist into addressing Complex Muscular-skeletal and Neurological dysfunctions.

It emphasises posture and biomechanics as an important tool in the prevention and management of sports injuries.

Throughout the course you will be introduced to the most up to date theories and practices of remedial massage therapy. It keeps best practice and safe practice as an important element in devising rehabilitation programs.

Overview Syllabus
Complex Assessments for Sports Massage Therapy

Conduct Complex Assessment for Sports massage and Remedial Orthopaedic Massage:

1. In depth study of the neurological system nerve pathways, Dermatomes / Myotomes /Reflex testing / nerve injuries

2. Patho-physiological neurological injuries and soft tissue dysfunction, injury management in phases of recovery / Ladders of rehabilitation

3. Biomechanical assessment: Posture and Gait assessment / analysis and re-balancing.

4. Goniometer assessments for all the major joints and the vertebral column.

5. Orthopaedic assessment for all the major joints: i.e. SLR Empty Can test, Lachmans test.

6. Clinical reasoning, problem solving and the capability of devising a treatment programme from information collected in the assessment procedures during the consultation process considering Yellow and Red flags.

Provide Complex Techniques and treatments:
1. To include advanced Orthopaedic/ Connective tissue treatments, SCS, STR, Myofascial Position Release, PNF, MET, Active Isolated Stretching (AIS), NMT, LDM

2. Demonstrate and apply the correct techniques following full assessment/ consultation.

3. Use of specialised equipment in prevention and management of sports related condition to include cupping, LDM, scraping and rehabilitation exercises

Apply the advanced techniques to patho-physiological injuries and soft tissue dysfunction in sports related conditions:

Soft tissue dysfunctions – Plantar fasciitis, Compartment syndrome, Ilio-tibial band syndrome, Piriformis syndrome, De Quervain’s, Dupuytren’s contracture and Torticollis.

Postural dysfunctions – Scoliosis, Kyphosis, Lordosis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Pes planus, Pes cavus, Hallux valgus, Hammer toe, Hallux rigidus, Tibial rotation, Monton’s Toe.

Sprains – Ankle Knee and shoulder Anterior talofibular ligament, Medial/Lateral Collateral ligament, Anterior cruciate, Posterior cruciate, Acromioclavicular A-C.

Strains – Gastrocnemius / Soleus strain, Achilles tendinitis, Adductor, Quadriceps and Hamstring, Rotator cuff tears, Medial and Lateral Epicondylitis.

Neurological injuries/soft tissue dysfunction - Morton’s neuroma , Sciatica, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Joint dysfunctions – Medial tibial stress syndrome, Patello-femoral pain syndrome (chondromalacia patellae) and Patella dislocation, Glenoid labrum tear, Facet syndrome, Subacromial bursitis and Impingement syndrome. Rotator Cuff Injuries and Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen shoulder) Shoulder impingement syndrome, AC joint separation

Examinations:
ITEC: Unit 459 Treatment evidence covering Sport Specific Conditions as per ITEC syllabus
ITEC: Assignments Unit 459 , 460 as per syllabus
ITEC: Treatment evidence covering element studied in both Unit 460
Practical: Examination and VIVA examination (20mins)
IISSM Continuous assessment
